Planning a Summer Road Trip to Mexico from Arizona? Here’s What Your U.S. Auto Insurance Won’t Cover
You’ve mapped the route, packed the cooler and lined up the playlist. What many drivers don’t think about until they’re at the border crossing is that the auto insurance policy sitting in their glove box likely stops financially protecting them the moment they cross into Mexico.
Your U.S. Policy Has a Hard Border
Most standard U.S. auto insurance policies exclude coverage in Mexico entirely. That means if you rear-end another vehicle or get into an accident on a toll road in Mexico, your insurer isn’t obligated to pay a cent. Mexican law requires drivers to carry Mexican auto insurance issued by a licensed Mexican insurer. A U.S. policy, regardless of how comprehensive it is, does not satisfy that requirement.
What You Actually Need
A separate Mexican auto insurance policy is the legally recognized solution. It should include liability coverage, physical damage coverage and legal assistance. Many policies also offer roadside assistance, which is valuable given the distance involved.
Before You Pack the Car
Confirm your current coverage, identify the gaps and secure a Mexican auto insurance policy before you leave. Waiting until you reach the crossing point is not a reliable strategy. Keep your insurance documents, vehicle registration and identification with you at all times. Be sure to familiarize yourself with Mexican driving laws and customs.
